I had the pleasure of hearing Horst Schulze speak yesterday. Horst was the president and COO for the The Ritz-Carlton hotels for many years and authored the operating and service standards that have become world famous in how to deliver world class customer experience.
He posed the question, “Are you just coming to work to work or are you showing up to create excellence?” Wow, that question stopped me in my tracks. He continued with exploring how we all strive for excellence and it’s not about MORE hours, it’s simply MORE excellence. Excellence doesn’t take more time to deliver. It does involve a decision. Each person needs to decide where can I create MORE excellence regardless of my position or role. I create my own work environment.
If you are a leader in the work place you have the responsibility to create the vision for the organization and then hire to that vision not just a function or role. Is the vision of your organization good for everyone is the organization? Is it good for the consumer? The community? If so, your organization has more than a vision it has a purpose.
After hearing Horst I became and felt inspired to do and become BETTER. Excellence is within my reach and it creates a stirring to bring out more of the leader within me. I believe excellence is within all of our reach. It’s not about perfection, it’s about bringing out YOUR best. So what’s within your reach that your want to bring excellence into your life?
