Through my teaching and preparation for teaching over the last few weeks this concept of connecting people’s head, heart and hands has been highlighted. What does it really mean? I could go in so many different directions with this concept starting with how am I personally connecting my head and heart and as a result for what do I do. For example, I am a trainer and facilitator. Technically I can TEACH on many topics or issues. Instead I chose to teach those that I have a passion or connection to. As a result that passion has a greater chance of connecting with the audience and creating change or impacting others.
Where this idea has been highlighted the most for me is in how we connect to others.
Real connection happens when we engage and connect the head and heart for ourselves AND for those we are working with. If I have a direct report or team we can discuss, think and create our strategic plans or goals and make progress towards them. Then there is this next level of alignment, collaboration and true connection to a purpose that can only occur when we involve the heart. When we bring in the heart, the why, the purpose that align with someones values or meet a personal need we create true connection. It opens everyone up to experience the plans, goals and strategies in a different more meaningful way. Now the hands following in the actions.
So the questions becomes how are you connecting? How do you involve others in decisions? How do they contribute to the mission or purpose with more than just their hands?
We can work ourselves to the top and it’s so much more fun with we do it with others.
